The Aurora Guitar Ensemble was founded in 2007 and comprises passionate and dedicated past and present classical guitar students of Dr Paul Svoboda. In 2014 we opened the Gala Concert of the Adelaide International Guitar Festival as special guests for Pepe Romero, Slava Grigoryan, Maximo Pujol and the Australian String Quartet.
Clothesline Magazine described our performance as “beautifully played guitars and superb arrangements; quite simply some of the most uplifting music I’ve heard in years.” Another highlight of the festival was when we acted as mentors to the inaugural Adelaide Guitar Festival Orchestra and worked with 50 inspiring young local guitarists who took part in that project. We were also chuffed that our debut album, Every Second Tuesday was one of the best-selling CDs of the festival! You can read about and listen to our CD here.
In 2016 we are thrilled to have just completed our second CD entitled Sunday
Sessions. The CD will launch in November. Our repertoire is diverse - you'll never be bored at one of our concerts! We perform early music from the Renaissance period, Classical works, contemporary Australian compositions, rock ballads, Latin style pieces (and even one piece using teaspoons!). Most of our pieces are composed by our director, Dr Paul Svoboda, and we benefit
greatly from being conducted and guided by the composer himself.
As well as travelling to the Adelaide International Guitar Festival, we have performed in the QPAC Concert Hall (“Songs of Hope and Healing” concert, 2015), the Brisbane Powerhouse (opening for the Grigoryan Brothers, 2012 ) and throughout South East Queensland and Coffs Harbour on numerous occasions. You can read about our past and upcoming concerts here.
Karin Schaupp, as well as Slava and Leonard Grigoryan have been excellent role models and mentors to our members, and we appreciate their support over the years. Read their thoughts about the Aurora Guitar Ensemble here.
